He seemed to have it all together, he had a high-ranking career in the NSW Police Force, a wife, three young boys, and was a preacher and evangelist in his local area. What went wrong?
As his professional career grew he became a high-ranking detective with Criminal Investigations. This involved working on unsolved homicides, cases involving serial killers and missing children.
“I used to be ten feet tall and bullet proof, and now I am starting to realise that maybe I am not.” He recalls. With lots of undercover work, he found himself in compromising situations and ended up having an extramarital affair. Subsequently his marriage and family crumbled and his life hit rock bottom. “Life was just about me.”
During the arrest of a serial killer, he found himself in total desperation and called out to God “I’ll never forget, I just prayed to the Lord, I emptied my heart to Him, that I needed help, I needed Him. And he showed up. So in my worst rebellion, when I needed God, I asked for Him and He answered me.”
The marriage had fallen “We were actually divorced, but neither of us remarried”, he recalls. “There was something inside me that wanted to see if we could reconcile”.
It was a long journey to forgiveness and regaining trust. 11 years later, they re-married. And now, as well as running a B&B, they regularly share their story both publically and privately and have seen many other marriages saved as a result.
“For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near.” – Ephesians 2:14-17 NKJV
