If you lost your sight, what else would you lose? And what would you find?
This man always thought he’d be a farmer, but when he went blind as a teenager, the future he’d imagined disappeared. For years, he demanded that God return his sight. But in the end, he found something far more valuable, when God led him to salvation.
His childhood was marked by arguments over God. One of his parents was Anglican, the other Catholic. He attended Sunday school and two churches, but in their confusion, he said his family didn’t know where God was.
As a teenager, he left the church behind, and he says he might never have gone back. But at seventeen, his vision started to fade due to an irreversible optic nerve condition. Within six months, he was legally blind.
He sought out God then, hoping he would return his eyesight. But though he prayed for many years, he didn’t live a Christian life.
When, in his forties, he finally got engaged, the minister said he would only marry him and his wife if he started going to church. He agreed to attend, but even then, his heart was hard.
One day, he agreed to share his testimony at an upcoming church dinner. But at home that night, he started to question himself. “I thought, well I can’t very well do that, because I’m not a Christian,” he recalls. He had two choices. Refuse to speak at the upcoming event, or become a Christian. So that very night, he asked God to forgive him for his false prayers, and to be his Lord and Saviour.
He had never learned Braille, so there was no way for him to read the Bible, until Christian radio came to his home town. Since then, it has been an invaluable resource for him in Bible study and his own preaching. “I’ve grown a lot in my belief, knowledge, and faith, through being able to hear the Word, when I obviously can’t read it.”
We all have hopes and dreams, but God’s plans for us are better than anything we could hope for. For a long time, he was blinded by anger, because God didn’t give him what he wanted. But God was patient, and with gentle encouragement, lead him into the light. He lost his sight, but found salvation, the most precious gift we can receive.

“Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?” He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.” Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him. And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.” Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, “Are we blind also?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.” – John 9:35-41 NKJV
